on the shallows

19 Dec 2024 30
On summer mornings at Wascana Lake waterfowl gather on the shallows to perform their early morning grooming. On this morning the water was calm, creating good reflections. A few white feathers floating on the surface indicate that the pelican had been busy grooming.

trnaquil and misty

I resolved to take out my Minolta film camera this summer and use some of the rolls of film that have been in the freezer for years. This image is from a roll of slide film. Editing jpeg files is more difficult than RAW, so there is some vignetting, and the sunlight is blown out on the extreme left. Still, I think the image conveys a mood.

ducks and higher education

The east end of Wascana Lake is more like a marsh, providing habitat for waterfowl and all manner of critters. The ducks moved away from the shore as I walked toward it. The building in the background is the Regina campus of Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

a tranquil pond

The east end of Wascana Lake is more like a marsh. Although there are apartments, and educational institution and the Trans-Canada Highway nearby, this area provides habitat for a lot of wildlife. This image was taken on a peaceful morning after the ice has left.

ducks on the Creek

During an early morning ramble around Wascana Park and the Creek of the same name, I saw this pair of ducks on the Creek. The last bits of ice can be seen on the water and by the edge of the creek.

mallards resting

These ducks were resting beside Wascana Lake, near a footpath that follows the shoreline. The ducks are habituated to humans walking or jogging by them, just a few feet away.

Parlement of Foules

Watching these waterfowl - ducks, gulls and pelicans - congregating together on a shallow spot on Wascana Lake reminded me of the poem Parlement of Foules by Geoffrey Chaucer. They seemed content to hang out together on a warm afternoon.

The waterfowl in Wascana Park in Regina are used to a lot of human activity, and allow a photographer to move in close, but there are rules about physical distancing...
