Val Marie beacon

A grain elevator at Val Marie, Saskatchewan, which is being restored by local people. Grain elevators were called beacons on the prairies because they were often the most visible object on the skyline, giving the location of the next community.

An elevator and caboose located by a railway siding at the south end of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Both offer a look into the early history of the town, but could use some TLC.

A relatively small grain elevator beside a caboose in the Franksaskois town of Gravelbourg. The town doesn't seem to promote the elevator as an attraction, although it and the caboose are well maintained. The mural on the caboose depicts settlers arriving at the railway station, which now houses a small business.

A photo buddy, Lynn, heading toward the abandoned grain elevator at a place called Moreland. The story is that when two surveyors for a railway branch line asked a local homesteader what they could expect to find ahead, he said "More land."

Sintaluta once had several elevators, including this one, which once belonged to the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Steel storage bins now take the place of grain elevators. The town is located beside the Canadian Pacific mainline that crosses Canada.

A grain elevator and some trees are all that is left of a community called Moreland. The rail line was removed years ago, and the elevator is gradually succumbing to the elements. Buildings of a nearby farm can just be seen in the distance.

When railway surveyors came through this area to survey for a branch line they reportedly asked local rancher Bill Parry what they could expect to find ahead. He is reported to have answered "more land", which became the name of this hamlet along the rail line. The grain elevator, a few trees and a historic plaque now mark the location.
