drowned trees at the GSH

12 Feb 2025 4 2 24
This image was taken near the line between vegetation and an active dune in the Great Sand Hills, showing trees that have been surrounded by the drifting sand. This image seemed to call for a vertical, rather than the usual horizontal.

ripples along a spine

Wind action creates ripples and sculpted lines on active dunes in the Great Sand Hills. The area also has patches of vegetation that manage to survive.

What was once a tree engulfed by a shirting sand dune in the Great Sand Hills.

pronghorn prints

Hoof prints of what I think are pronghorn antelope in the Great Sand Hills. They might be deer prints, but I think it more likely that they are pronghorn antelope, which are relatively common in the sand hills.

A view of the active dues in the Great Sand Hills, which are almost constantly being sculpted by the wind.

life on the edge-GSH

For vegetation living along the edges of the active dunes of the Great Sand Hills, life is precarious.

after the storm passed

An abandoned farm house located at the northern edge of the Great Sand Hills, near Sceptre, Saskatchewan. The remnant of a wild storm that had passed through overnight looks over the scene the following morning.

a small green patch 2

Hay bales dot the fields just north of the Great Sand Hills, but the straight lines of the hay baler were interrupted by a low spot where the vegetation was green. The remnants of a terrific electrical storm linger in the sky in the background.

windy handiwork at the GSH

A perspective from the base of one of the active dunes at the Great Sand Hills. The dunes are constantly shifting, mostly due to wind action.

life is precarious on the edge

The sand hills are always shifting, mostly due to the power of the ever-present wind. These grasses and other vegetation show the dividing line (perhaps for a brief time) between the active dune and where some tough plants have taken root.

a line across the sky

I took this image in September 2013, on my way to the Great Sand Hills in southwest Saskatchewan. There had been a terrific electrical storm overnight, but because of the light soil there were few traces of the rainfall. The remnants of the storm can be seen here, moving off to the southeast. Using the better editing tools now available, I decided to try editing the image. With a 21:9 crop and some tweaking to the sky and the vegetation, I think it makes a better image.

checking out the photographer

Light snow had fallen on this mid-April morning, as a pronghorn antelope stood awkwardly to assess whether the photographer was a threat. This image was taken at the edge of the Great Sand Hills in Saskatchewan.

ribs of snow

A dusting of snow had settled into the ripples in the sand dune, while a critter had recently walked by. This image taken in the Great Sand Hills on a mid-April morning.

what is next?

While processing this image I wondered if the tree in the lower left might be the next to be inundated by the drifting sand. The dunes move roughly to the east, driven by the near constant westerly winds.
