green badlands 4

As the snow melts in Spring the foliage in the badlands will be vibrant shades of green. As is often the case, over the summer there will be little rainfall, but intense heat, and the foliage will fade to shades of brown and beige. This image was taken in the first half of June.

If the spring of the year is "wet", the badlands will still be green in June, as in this image. However, a hot and dry summer will cause the green to face to brown and beige.

Snow on mountain peaks in June gives one an idea of the different climatic zones that exist at different elevations. As a flatlander I decided to try to capture the grandeur of the mountain, but I was also curious about the dead trees in the foreground. An insect pest, or some other cause?

The rocks at Red Rock Coulee eventually succumb to the weathering effects of wind, water and temperature extremes. This large rock had broken into several pieces when I took this image. moonrise over Red Rock Coulee 3

Red Rock Coulee, south of Medicine Hat, Alberta, is an odd landscape with large and small red-coloured boulders. Warm evening light made the colour even more striking, as the moon rose in the background. Don’t use this image on websites, blogs or other media without explicit permission. One of the appeals of Waterton is that it is less crowded than the other mountain parks. Don’t use this image on websites, blogs or other media without explicit permission. Copyright William Armstrong. 2019
