reflections on the channel
15 Dec 2024 |

|
On a foggy morning at Wascana Lake, as the sun rose a bit higher and began to burn off the fog, the reflections of trees on the water grew more pronounced.

A pool on Swift Current Creek, with light filtering through the tree canopy. I thought the light on the stones and the water made a rough triangle.
'40 Ford Grille

A portion of the grille of a 1940 Ford. I took this image at a show n shine, where several car restorers had their cars on display. You can selections of the cars on either side in the reflections on the hood.

Ponds like this one appear all over Prince Albert National Park, and around northern Saskatchewan, for that matter. The sense of stillness and the muted colours under an overcast sky attracted me to stop and take some images.

The same pond, but edited using one of the black and white alternatives in my photo editing app. With all of the alternatives offered I think the challenge is to maintain some sense of the original.
dock reflections

|

I took this image as an exercise in composition. The still water and the flat light made for some interesting reflections. I also thought about how quickly plants in the water had adapted to the presence of the dock, which had likely only been installed a few weeks before, after the ice left.

This tree may have drowned, but the level of Wascana Lake is always high in the Spring, and after a colder-than-normal spring, the buds are delayed.
rippled reflections

My intent was to capture the reflections on the Moose Jaw River, and I can't explain the impressionistic look of the foliage in the upper right. I'm not sure where the shoreline is, but I like that this image invites a longer look.

A sunrise over Wascana Lake in the park of the same name, on the final day of September.

I like Impressionist art, but I've not often tried for impressionistic effects in my photos. However, when I looked closely at this I saw that with a bit of cropping I could present mostly reflections of the creek bank in the rippling water, giving it an impressionistic effect. I find it a bit disorienting, but I like it.

Canada Geese inspect a dragon boat moored in Wascana Lake. Dragon boat races are held on the lake each summer.

Little Manitou reflections 2

|
Another view of the new shoreline created by higher water levels in Little Manitou Lake, which is very salty because it has no natural drainage outlet, relying on evaporation to regulate the water level.
Little Manitou reflections

|
A few years of higher-than-usual precipitation raised the water level in Little Manitou Lake, which has no natural drainage outlet. This left the usual beach areas underwater and trees like this one drowned.
