By good luck the evening sunlight was on the head of the deer as I took this image. Right place, right time.

I had just packed my gear in my vehicle and begun driving when I saw a mother deer with her doe by the side of the road. By the time I stopped and readied my camera the two had moved from the ditch onto the road. The mother was obviously cautious and watchful, but also curious enough to have a long look. I spoke quietly to them, which may or may not have an effect. Eventually the mother headed across the ditch, over the fence and into the field, with the doe following.
