Roaming around a community garden in the early morning, I noticed one red flower surrounded by pale blue and purple blossoms. It was early in the morning, so there was still some deep on the flower petals.

Every summer I take a stroll to the back alley near my place to look for a couple of poppies that grow along the fence. I assume these poppies are volunteers; that they were not planted there. I like the contrast between the green and bright red of the plant with the grey weathered fence in the background.

Poppies were recognized for their resilience as they continued to grow even amidst the mud and carnage of WWI battlefields. Each spring I look forward to walking down a back alley in my neighbourhood, where a poppy plant appears. This poppy receives no extra water or attention, but still it appears every year.

Every summer a few volunteer poppies appear in a back alley close to my home. The plants that grow there - including weeds - do so on a strip of land beside a fence, receiving no attention or support, other than from the occasional photographer.
