a surfeit of pollen 2

A hollyhock near home seen during an evening ramble. The flower seems to have pollen to spare, but there were only a few bees around to enjoy it.

pollen for the taking

I hung around some hollyhocks, hoping that a bee would come to gather some pollen, but there were no takers while I was there. Perhaps the bees were put off by my hanging around.

For several summers I have enjoyed taking photos of the hollyhocks that grow against the wall of a building near where I live. It is a pleasant time in the evening when the wind has died down. However, this year I've noticed that there are no bees collecting pollen, as compared to previous years. It is concerning.

Working with a new macro lens, there were more misses than hits the first few times out in the garden. This was one of the better images.

Just a short walk from my home several hollyhock plants grow along the south-facing wall of a building. The plants grow to more than two metres tall, and produce yellow, red and pink flowers. On warm evenings bees are busily collecting pollen, but they are elusive. This is a good second-best.

There is a profusion of hollyhocks near my home. On warm summer evenings the bees are busy gathering pollen, but they are a challenge to photograph before they move on to the next blossom.

On summer evenings the hollyhocks near my home are alive with bees collecting pollen, to the point where they appear to be overloaded. The bees move quickly, so achieving a relatively sharp image is a challenge.

On summer evenings bees are attracted to a stand of hollyhocks near where I live. This bee seems to have found a plentiful source of pollen.

A close up of the amaryllis that was in our kitchen, about a day before it bloomed. Sadly, now, it is no more.

This flower has so much pollen that it is difficult to tell between the flower and the been's butt. There's enough pollen left over for the flower petals, as well.

The bee is not quite in sharp focus, but this flower has plenty of pollen to offer. Do not use this image on blogs, websites or other media without permission. © 2015 William Armstrong. All rights reserved.
