blue hour by the Lake

Blue hour comes late in late December, so I had plenty of time to prepare when I saw the frost that had covered everything overnight. I took this along one of the pathways around Wascana Lake in Regina.
windbreak and barn

Early morning light on a windbreak and a vintage barn, somewhere south of Regina, Saskatchewan. Such windbreaks are common, providing some shelter from the northerly and westerly winds.
drowned trees at the GSH

This image was taken near the line between vegetation and an active dune in the Great Sand Hills, showing trees that have been surrounded by the drifting sand. This image seemed to call for a vertical, rather than the usual horizontal.
trees at sunrise

Driving west on the Trans-Canada Highway I spotted mist above a small wetland - commonly called a slough - beside a side road north of the highway. The sun was beginning to rise into a cloudy sky, creating an unusual colour and adding a tint to the mist.
hillside roots-Pine Cree

The sides of the hills that form Pine Cree Coulee rise steeply, with tree roots exposed in places, such as in this image. I think the network of roots is fascinating.

Trees leaning over Swift Current Creek to form the letter A, in Piece Cree Regional Park. In this image I cropped it as a 6x8.
pathway into the light

Strong side light coming through trees and falling on a path in Wascana Park. This image was recorded on slide film, which has a distinctive look. I lightly edited the jpeg file, and wasn't able to entirely remove the vignetting in the upper left.
rays through trees

|
Working with a film camera and slide film for the first time in ages, I didn't know how the film would react to a scene like this. I had to lighten the dark areas a bit. Editing a jpeg file rather than a RAW file is an adventure. This image was taken after sunrise at Wascana Park in Regina.

Another perspective of the rising sun filtered through trees in Wascana Park.

The wildflowers in the foreground were lit up by the sun coming through the gap in the trees. This image was taken in Wascana Park in Regina.
church framed by trees

|
A church at Kayville, Saskatchewan. The grounds around the church are surrounded by trees and bushes, making it challenging to capture images of the entire building. Framing the entry way into the church grounds was one option. I can't remember the name of this church; I may have to go back there to refresh my memory.

I don't know the date this was taken, although it was taken on an older camera I no longer own. I like the way the backlight silhoutted the trees. It must have been taken in the spring or fall.

The mature trees surrounding this country cemetery indicate that it has been there for a long time. I found it to be a peaceful spot, and tried to convey that through this image.

A ring of dead trees around a wetland (or former wetland) silhoutted by an August sunset. This image was taken near Lemberg, Saskatchewan.
dune&trees

The dunes of the Great Sand Hills in Saskatchewan are constantly shifting. Driven by the prevailing westerlies, this dune may eventually "drown" the trees on the side of the dune.
