red on green

01 Feb 2025 1 18
Every summer I look for some volunteer poppies that grow along a fence beside a back alley near my home. They don't last long. Macro photography is a challenge, but occasionally I capture an image that comes close to what I see.

ants on orange

16 Jan 2025 18
Some of the lilies in my back garden blossom in a stunning orange colour. I enjoy spending time with them, enjoying their aroma as I work up close with a macro lens. When I came to edit this image I noticed two ants on a petal, so they provided the title.

pollen for the taking

05 Sep 2024 1 36
I hung around some hollyhocks, hoping that a bee would come to gather some pollen, but there were no takers while I was there. Perhaps the bees were put off by my hanging around.

a burst of yellow

02 Sep 2024 1 41
The same showy blossom, but with a different crop and a tweaked (lighter) background.

a yellow burst

02 Sep 2024 2 4 43
This small and bright flower bloomed in a pot on my back deck, producing many showy blossoms over the summer.

yellow hollyhock - close-up

30 Aug 2024 33
The hollyhocks that grow near my home produce a variety of colours, from pale yellow to deep red. This one appeared to be asking me for a close-up.

loops

A distinctive type of lily that grows in a couple of places in my back garden. Macro photography is difficult, but these lilies are so bright and attractive that I keep going back and trying again.

clematis close-up

14 Jul 2024 3 1 49
A macro of one of the blooms on the clematis that grows outside my back patio door. During the summer it is one of the first things I look for in the early morning. I took this image before the breeze came up. The beige background is the stucco wall behind the plant, which had grown to about seven feet.

bug on bright yellow

05 Apr 2024 2 1 62
My intent was to take some micro photos of this bright yellow flower. As a bonus a flying insect landed on a petal and stayed long enough to add to the image.

it's a messy job..

27 Mar 2024 2 3 59
Working with a new macro lens, there were more misses than hits the first few times out in the garden. This was one of the better images.

cosmos close-up

31 Dec 2023 47
A cosmos flower that grew in my garden in 2023. This delicate beauty served as a subject for an exercise with my macro lens during the summer months.

wandering leaf 1

11 Dec 2023 4 67
This leaf caught my eye in a parking lot as I was about to get into my car. I picked it up and brought it home. I put the 90mm macro lens on my camera, and took the leaf to various locations near where I live. This is the first in a series of images featuring the leaf.

Asiatic lily close-up

17 Sep 2023 2 53
These lilies with the unusual colours grow in two raised boxes behind a neighbour's fence. She is away from home regularly, so I water them to ensure they flourish. These lilies are one of the things I look forward to enjoying every summer. What the photo cannot convey is the wonderful aroma they give off.

tiger lily close-up 2

11 Sep 2023 4 62
The plants in my backyard, like this tiger lily, gave me plenty of opportunities to try out my macro lens this summer. This was one of the better results..

bee resting

27 Aug 2023 3 64
Walking around a community garden on a cool morning I saw this tricoloured bee nestled inside a flower. I think the bee may have spent the night there, because it did not move when I came close with my macro lens.

lily macro exercise

12 Aug 2023 4 2 49
A macro shot of a tiger lily growing in my back yard. I'd like to say that I took this image after a good rain, but alas, I had watered the garden.

lily close-up

28 Jul 2023 1 49
The morning light on this lily was gorgeous, as was the flower itself. I tried to capture that, and while I didn't nail the focus as I'd hoped, I'll take this.

delphinium, community garden

28 Jul 2023 42
Delphiniums growing in an area with other flowering plants, in a community garden near where I live.
