After lying dormant for more than a century, Tongariro erupted in 2012 at upper Te Māri Crater. There were two eruptions, one in August and a much smaller one on 21 November. When we passed the mountain 6 days later there was still some activity.

Coromandel Walkway is a walking track round the northernmost tip of the Coromandel peninsula between Fletcher Bay and Stony Bay. Road access to both bays is by narrow unsealed roads that often are in a bad state -as is the walkway, currently partially closed due to landslides.

8 km along 309 road a walking track leads to the most accessible and mature kauri stand on Coromandel peninsula. Kauri (agathis australis) grow very slowly and very straight, shedding their lower branches as they grow and were therefore very popular for building. There are only a few pockets of mature Kauri left, mostly in Northland and Coromandel, which are now protected.

Hot Water Beach on the eastern Coromandel coast gets its name from underground hot springs. Around low tide visitors can dig their own hot pool in the sand. Walking just a bit along the beach one can easily escape the crowds.
