Lopphavet, a notoriously stormy stretch of sea, was exceedingly calm that day. Northern lights started early in the evening, this was taken at 6 p.m. near the island of Silda. Please view on black!

Ørnes

Morning blue hour at Ørnes harbour. Ørnes has ca. 1600 inhabitants and is the centre of Meløy kommune. It is a regular Hurtigruten stop and a busy hub for fjord ferries to the many islands in the area. In summer it's a popular tourist spot with Svartisen glacier one of the main attractions.

6.30 p.m.- start to a night of aurora hunting. The moon was so bright that everything cast shadows. EXIF as stated on the right Lens: Tokina 11-16/2,8, tripod, 2sec.selftimer plus mirror lockup, fully manual. Developed in Lightroom from a single RAW shot, white balance adjusted to ca. 3900 Kelvin, noise reduction, lens correction and minor adjustments to clarity, contrast, highlights, shadows and sharpness.

Northern lights started around 9.30 p.m. at Rørvik, this was taken at 10 p.m. sailing south through Nærøysund ( Kp-index 5-6) . Also see inset picture! Some time after midnight the Kp-index rose to an insane 8-9. The auroras began flickering like disco lights, moving incredibly fast- impossible to photograph anymore.

Taken from Hurtigruten ship MS Vesterålen just off Berlevåg. In the circumstances -up to 8 Beaufort, we didn't manage to get into the harbour- this was the best I could come up with. One deck lower the camera got wet with sea spray.
