Laguna Hedionda ("stinking lagoon", due to its sulphur content) is one of a string of Altiplano lagoons in SW Bolivia situated near the border to Chile at well over 4100m. Chiar Khota is the hispanized version of the Aymara Ch'iyar Quta (black lake). Another of the string of highland lagoons near the Chilean border, Laguna Chiar Khota lies at 4201m. Laguna Honda (4114m) is one of a string of salt lagoons in SW Bolivia near the border to Chile. The highland lagoons are a main breeding area of the endemic James's flamingo.
