The pub claims great antiquity - its former website stated that it had been licensed in the reign of Charles II - but the building is not listed. Cf. a postcard view postmarked in 1910: www.search.staffspasttrack.org.uk/Details.aspx?&ResourceID=37850 .

C16 inn, altered in C19 and substantially restored and extended c1963 following a fire. The upward step in the jetty indicates a carriage way through to the rear, blocked in the C19 when the ground-floor bay windows were also added. The brick gable end is part of the C20 reconstruction.
