Looking down on the eastern Sierras and Owens Valley from the kilns.

Day four of this trip begins our first all-wheel drive trek into Death Valley. Entering from Panamint Valley's Wildrose Canyon Road, we climb past where my lousy Mazda overheated in 2005 and I was unable to hike Telescope Peak. About four miles past Wildrose Camp are these charcoal kilns from the mining era.

This is as high as we got. I thought about driving farther up the next day after things cooled off, but felt ill prepared for the 14 mile, 3,000 ft hike up Telescope after spending time camping in this relentless heat.

The heat spiked up to over 100 and we had to take refuge at an abandoned ranger station which had the only shade.

Trying to drive up to the Mesquite campground which is 8,000 feet and hopefully cooler, but the car was overheating badly. It was not in the cards.

Also many jackrabbits popping in and out of cooler vegetation.

The camp is deserted. Groups of quail-like desert birds (chukars, I think) kept making appearances.

Arrived at Wildrose camp. We knew the valley floor could be 120 degrees, but thought this spot at 4,000 ft elevation, which we visited in the freezing cold in March, would be pleasant in July. It was very hot!

Love these formations at the beginning of Emigrant Caynon resembling cliff dwellings.

Wildrose camp. Only about 4,000 feet high but really cold for camping this time of year (so we didn't).
