Looking downstream from this hill above the dam. The spillway drains into a channel that runs nearly invisible through these ranches. Before these dams were built the San Bernadino runoff probably created more of a river environment to Victorville as I had imagined.

Ultimately we find another dam that has a real lake above it, Silverwood Lake. Above that is a large watershed but no streams called Mojave so I guess this is the source, of one fork anyway.
