From what I've read, the new sign stating high clearance implicit and there is no tow service is true, and I wouldn't take my Subaru down it. Maybe there was a flash flood since Manson's day. If we get a Jeep we'll try it.

The original back of the sign shows 4WD recommended. Mason's bunch used to sneak up this pass from Saline Valley, sometimes in 2WD cars.

Lippincott Pass at the south end of Racetrack Valley. This is where Charlie Manson and friends burned up an earth mover which got them on local authorities radar. They probabaly would have gotten away with the L.A. murders if not for this blunder.
