Took Hwy 26 East to get to a bit of remote National Forest land near John Day, OR. Slept like a baby that night.

Woodsy Owl also did it. And somehow as a giant who can look at the sun even before the shadow hits him. Curious.

We did it! Still had challenges finding a camp spot heading out. Eastern Oregon is mostly private or fenced and leased BLM land.

We are still eclipsed here. You can't see the black moon without a telephoto in this picture, but I am still viewing without glasses. When the first speck of sun returns, everything lights up like a gigantic arc lamp was flicked on, and in a split second you can't look at it again. Just as magical a moment as when it went away.

At the center of the path, we get the full two minutes of totality to experience. You could also see some of the brighter stars and planets in the twilight-like sky.

I'm surprised my camera even picks it up, but it does a decent job. With the naked eye, in addition to the three main and relatively static flares, a saw a wisp of yellow solar flare blow out of the upper left, followed by a tiny red spot.

Simply thrilling, stunning, and mind blowing. Hearing other people yelling in the distance adds to the excitement.

Then suddenly, the last speck viewed with your glasses disappears, and WOW, you can perceive the sky shuts off like a light from your peripheral vision. Take off the glasses, and WOW WOW there it is!

I'm hamming it up pretending to be cold, but the temps did drop about 10 degrees to something more pleasant as the event approached.

It's getting close. Note the shift to orange ambient light as the sun reduces to a sliver. In the next photo it gets even more intense.

Believe it or not, people were still driving in the main dirt road minutes before the event.

We are DEVO! I put on my glasses to test them out about 9:40 and surprised to see the eclipse had already started. I failed to research that the slow event would take about an hour before and after the totality at 10:43.

Next day, we are not surrounded by cars or people in our camp, and quite happy about that! Also happy we brought our portable shade unit, as it was in the low 90s out here.

We got really lucky. Only about five vehicles dared come down this little spur (some in the middle of the night), and either turned back, our found another tiny patch a few hundred yards away from us. This stressful day was followed by a pretty sleepless night.

I took a rough spur that would outfox any non-4W drive cars down to a little pullout. The main dirt road you see above my open passenger door had vehicles streaming in all evening and even sporadically all night.

Climbing high, high up Lookout Mountain from the distant mining camp ravine below. Steep terrain and limited safe parking without starting a grass fire meant every possible pullout was occupied by a camper.

The really nice BLM rangers told us about another entrance a few miles up the highway that was not blocked by private property. It also had a National Guard unit posted, but they kindly waved us in.
