Final anecdote: The previous night was threatening to rain in Panamint Valley and we were nervious about going off in the sand to camp, so we opted to get a room in Ridgecrest. There was some event on, but we managed to get the last room in a really bad hotel. We got a discount because the door was broken due to a police raid. Someone knocked on the door in the middle of the night wanting to buy drugs.
