I expect someone to say that as Starforth is south of the River Tees it is in Yorkshire, not Durham, such are the vagaries of boundary changes (1971)!
The parish church, built 1863 by J. & W. Hay of Liverpool, replacing a medieval building.
The place-name 'Startforth' is first attested circa 1050, when it appears as Stretford. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Stradford. The name means 'street-ford', and refers to the paved ford by which the Roman road which passes through the village crosses the River Tees. The Roman road in question here linked the Roman forts of Bowes and Binchester. The paved ford is still visible in the bed of the river when the water is low.

The Deerness Valley Railway was an 8-mile long single track branch railway line that ran along the valley of the River Deerness in County Durham, England. Built by the North Eastern Railway, it ran from Deerness Valley Junction, on the Durham to Bishop Auckland line, to the coal mines along the valley via two intermediate stations, Waterhouses, and Ushaw Moor.

The College was the former outer court of the Durham monastery. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in the late 1530s, it was converted into the accommodation for the Dean and 12 Prebends.
Periodic remodelling has given the buildings of the College a Georgian appearance, but they are essentially medieval buildings, all of which retain at least part of their original fabric.
The Deanery is the largest residence in the Church of England (excluding bishops' palaces) and is home to the Dean of Durham (and formerly the priors of the monastery). Many of the buildings in The College are now home to members of the Cathedral clergy and other staff, as well as housing part of the Cathedral Library and the Chorister School.

Found my self climbing through Pelaw Woods today, due to a landslip along the riverbank.
I had never seen this view of Durham City before, from the Cathedral to the ECML Viaduct with the River Wear and Castle all in one shot.
