"Anything at all to do with circles" TSC488, my first TSC, June 5th 2021.
The Caretos from the village of Podence in northern Portugal are mysterious figures who appear at Carnival time.
The Careto tradition is a pre-historical Celtic religious ritual still practised in some regions of Portugal, namely in the villages of Podence (Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança District), Vila Boa de Ousilhão (Vinhais, Bragança District), Varge (Aveleda, Bragança District), among others. It currently takes place during Winter and, in certain regions, Carnival and is one of the oldest traditions being practiced in Portugal still today.
The clay pot is dedicated to them.
The rooster of Barcelos.
Legend has it that a Galician man was condemned to be hanged on suspicion of committing a crime in the village. To prove his innocence, he designed a roasted rooster that was on the table and declared: "My innocence is as obvious as it is obvious that this rooster will crow when you hang me".
The impossible happened. At the moment of being hanged the rooster stood up and crowed! The Galician was immediately released.
