Now a compulsive pipe smoker, Dick favoured a bent briar which was seldom out of his mouth. He was also frequently wearing a deerstalker hat and told anyone who would listen that he had discovered the grave of Sherlock Holmes. He would produce this photograph as proof although he professed to have forgotten the place where he had made the picture.
