Fire Hydrant Sign

Photographed with a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera. This lens was amongst the first of the new Canon EF mount and precedes the digital technology. However, it works well enough on my £69 EOS 30D. I love making pictures with old kit. The latest tech might be better, but by what margin? f/8, 1/500th, 800 ISO. Going for sharpness at the expense of noise. Not that 800 ISO is particularly bad on a 30D anyway.

28 is Missing

Weymouth, Dorset. Photographed with my Nikon D40, a newly-acquired camera, practically new in a carton missing only the kit lens. Not bad for £59. And light as a feather (nearly).

Sekonic L-8

24 May 2014 162
The Sekonic L-8 exposure meter was imported in large numbers to the UK by Hanimex (Hannes Import Export). They were built in Australia, although the design work was, I think, Japanese. I photographed it with a Nikkor Type C 55mm f/3.5 Micro-PC Auto mounted on an M2 extension tube and then put on a Nikon D50. This is the only safe method of using the Nikkor Type C 55mm f/3.5 Micro-PC Auto on a D50, or indeed any digital Nikon fitted with screw-drive AF. Putting the lens directly onto the camera will cause damage.

Pew Number 11

On 2nd February, 1916, St Peter's Church, Poulshot, was almost destroyed by fire. By 1925 it had been rebuilt. That event puts a date on the craftsmanship of this pew. Nikon D2Xs and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens.

East Somerset Railway

01 Jul 2015 201
I visited the East Somerset Railway near Cranmore in Somerset on 1st July, a hot day such as Edward Thomas immortalised in 'Adlestrop'. I reflected on what enables preserved railways such as this to thrive. Enthusiasm, of course - of volunteers and visitors alike. And the availability of locomotives and rolling stock, thanks to Dai Woodham at Barry not being in a rush to break up the scrapped BR locomotives. But - paradoxically perhaps - it is the motor car which makes preserved steam possible, for it often operates in the back of beyond, and is accessible only by private transport for all practical purposes. Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G lens.

The Number Plate That Fell Off, Chapter Two

23 Sep 2018 1 110
In Chapter One, you will recall, I related how I had found a number plate in the gutter. It looked lonely and forlorn, and so I picked it up and carried it home. The shed seemed to be the place where it was happiest and it became chummy with an old singular boot lace and a double-edged saw rescued from a junk shop. Whenever there was a camera in the shed it begged to be photographed, oblivious to the clutter in front of it. Thus far the only way to give it gallery space commensurate with its stark and simple beauty has been to crop out the extraneous tools, shafts, and machinery craving photographic attention. That has made the record of this notable event a very small file, yet still capable of enhancement in Lightroom. And behold: it is now more yellow, more contrasty, more exciting. In Chapter Three, I hope that the number plate that fell off will reveal more of its characters. That will entail a Great Expedition across the Foothills of Junk, and the Ascent of the Far End of Shed. Frankly, the prospect is non too appealing.
