Meanwhile, Near To A Place Where Ice Cream is Sold

The Biss Meadows Renovation Opening Event of 2013. They may have re-renovated since; it's a large area and reliant on volunteers to keep it presentable.
Leaving the civic hoo-hah and speeches, I chanced upon this charming threesome who agreed to my taking their photograph.
I used a Nikon D50 at 400 ISO and 1/250th, Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 AF G at 70mm and f/4 (i. e. wide open). I've bought this lens at least twice because for the money it's really quite good (but best under 200mm). It's also very light in weight. The later VR version is better, but not by as much as you might expect given its higher cost (and it weighs a lot more).

For twenty or thirty years the middle of Trowbridge resembled a bomb site while developers built on the farmland beyond. Then gradually at first, but with ever-increasing haste, the neglected areas were tidied and spirits rose amongst the populace who had endured the squalor and lamented the lack of official interest. Now, there are few old sites left, and even some of the improved areas have been demolished and started over. Ashton Mill is sure to be on someone's list for the wrecking ball, or gentrification

The October sun has dried the autumn leaves where the wet western wind swept them into the margins of the footbridge over the Biss. But soon they must crumble and nourish the earth for spring.

I used a long-discontinued Canon EOS 30D with a cheap secondhand 18-55mm kit lens for this picture. It's not a lightweight camera, but it is the lightest I've got, and I had some shopping to do. I probably need a compact camera, or a mirrorless, but the only type I am comfortable using is the SLR. It first became popular around 1960 (the SLR, not the Canon EOS 30D) and its been pre-eminent for almost 60 years. But its day is done, and I lament its inevitable decline and forthcoming marginalisation into some expensive photographic ghetto.
The Canon EOS 30D is a light-tight box with everything I need. I don't want geographical positioning, or immediate internet connection, nor can I not manage without articulated viewing screens and something called 'live view'. I paid about £60 for the camera and subsequently bought its successor, the EOS 40D, believing it would be even better. It wasn't, and I got rid of it. One of my main gripes was that it wasn't even as comfortable to hold, and its menu system was Byzantine compared to the simplicity of the 30D.
