La danse des graines de marronnier d'Inde.
Do not be misled by the shooting information. I bought the Canon EOS 40D on eBay from a bloke who had put the name 'Paul Smith' into the memory of the camera. Every picture taken with that camera would therefore be tagged 'Paul Smith'. Either the seller forgot to delete 'Paul Smith' or did not know how to delete it. I did not notice for a while that I had become 'Paul Smith'. When eventually I did notice, it did not much bother me. It is a decent sort of name, after all. Owning a new name might, I thought, confuse the tax collection authorities and result in new found wealth. (It did not). Later, much later, I researched and discovered how to get rid of 'Paul Smith' (no, not murder, I am not a gangster). So a blank field replaced Paul, who had made some pretty mediocre photographs for a good while, and then I sold the camera because I hated the structure of the menu and it wasn't much better, if at all, than the EOS 30D which it had superseded and which I still keep to this day.
Another thing not to be misled over is the lens I used to take this photograph. The software takes a mad guess based on the electronics in the adapter I use for mounting M42 lenses. In actual fact, this photograph was taken with a Soligor C/D 28mm Wide-Auto f/2.8.
Finally do not be misled into believing I speak French. It is Google translator which has that skill, amongst others with whom sadly I am not acquainted.
What's In My Bag?

This is my eBay bag. Pretty much everything inside it, and the bag itself, was bought on eBay. Mercifully I didn't pay much for any of it, and a few things have been satisfyingly amusing to use.
Photographed with a Soligor CD Wide-Auto f/2.8 lens mounted via an EOS-M42 adapter to a Canon EOS 30D - all of them from eBay too.
I couldn't read the viewfinder information for any of the photographs I made today and guessed and adjusted. Most were out of focus. I don't think the Soligor lets in sufficient light and probably it would perform better on a full-frame camera. Its serial number suggests it was made in 1980 by Sun. I wonder how many pairs of hands it has been through. It is in such good condition that I suspect it has been used only very seldom. I shan't be trying again with it for a little while.

A Soligor C/D Wide-Auto f/2.8 28mm lens mounted on a Canon EOS digital camera via an inexpensive M42 - EOS adapter.
Soligor lenses were aimed at the economy end of the photography market during the 1970s and 1980s. Like Vivitar, they did not manufacture lenses themselves, but drew up specifications and invited tenders from Japanese optical companies, like Sun, who made this example (there are many other similar Soligor 28mm lenses). It is to the C/D ('computer designed') standard which marks it out as quite a bit better than the company's more ordinary offerings. This example is provided with the M42 thread which was at the time still popular despite being phased out by the prominent camera manufacturers who had used it (mainly Pentax).
Made by Sun in 1980. Bought for £21 in 2015. I probably paid over the odds.

Like Vivitar, Soligor did not manufacture lenses. Instead they specified the optical configuration they wanted and invited bids from Japanese lens makers. This particular lens was to the premium C/D ('computer designed') standard and was made by Sun in 1980 (you can tell this by its serial number). Within a few years the market for M42 screw thread lenses had declined as third party suppliers like Soligor followed the bayonet lens standard.

Canon EOS 40D + Soligor C/D 28mm Wide-Auto f/2.8 lens. The field of view of a 28mm wide-angle lens on a Canon crop sensor camera is 45mm. You get a standard lens experience but with the depth-of-field advantages a wide-angle lens provides.
