Detail from a letter card. These innovative Post Office products spared you from buying stationery and being expected to write at length, because being the same in size as just two postcards you soon ran out of space. '3d' converts to one and a half new pence in Britain's decimal currency which replaced the old Lsd in February 1971. Photographed with a Nikon D700, Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8, and a Nikon Close-Up supplementary lens no.4T.

I used two supplementary lenses in combination for this picture: a Nikon Close-Up No.4T screwed into the filter ring of a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens, and a Minolta Close-Up No.1 screwed into the 4T.
Even acknowledging the superior optical quality of these supplementary lenses, you can see the degradation from using two together. I certainly would not recommend the cheap thin types unless you deliberately want to create a low-fi look. The inescapable conclusion is to use a proper macro lens for close-up work.
