Indoors in August

30 Oct 2024 1 41
It was warm in August. The light was long and good. Now the clocks have gone back. The children are excited about Halloween. The days are cool, the evenings dark before you've thought of tea. The light is not so good for dressmaking, and the impetus is weak as well. Soon it will be Christmas. Doesn't it all come round quickly?

Three Frocks

I continue to provide accommodation for an old Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8 dating from 1971. Occasionally I ask it to pay its rent by pointing it in some random direction. Photographed with a Nikon D700. F/5.6; 1/125th.

Dresses, f/4, 800 ISO

Using a 28mm f/2 Nikkor 28mm lens on a Nikon D2Xs, I photographed this scene at three different settings, all with 1/125th shutter speed. The first was at 3200 ISO and f/8. The high ISO negated any advantage of the small aperture. The third was at 200 ISO and f/2. Despite what I had read about the excellence of this lens even wide open, it was not the best. The picture shown here was easily the best despite the use of 800 ISO where received wisdom says that the D2X becomes unusable. The aperture was f/4. In every case I cleaned the photos up using the same settings on Lightroom. That made a big improvement to all of them.

The Summer Frocks Await the Sun

Still they hang, carefully ironed, awaiting the sun and their chance to shine with it. Yet the rain persists, and the weeds grow ever bolder. I used a Nikkor 50mm f/2 AI lens to photograph the dresses. I also gave the 28mm f/2 and the 85mm f/1.8 a go, but this is my preferred picture on this occasion.

Nikon D2Xs and Nikkor-O.C 35mm f/2 lens. According to Pindelski, "this lens is fully the equal of any Leitz or Leica 35mm Summicron on a Leica M". He also observes that it is a great deal cheaper too. pindelski.org/Photography/2012/05/05/nikkor-o-35mm-f2-lens/

Open Wardrobe

Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor-O.C Auto 35mm f/2 lens. Lens made circa 1973. Camera on 800 ISO - not where the D2Xs does its best work, but needs must if no flash. Aperture wide open at f/2. High speed crop deployed, making the field of view experience 2 x 35mm. (All the characteristics of the 35mm nevertheless remain). Using high speed crop is handy for getting in closer, but it halves the MP from 12 to 6 and it would therefore be a better idea to change to a lens with greater telephoto capability.

Frocks and Books

Another photograph revealing who is hanging out in Limbo Hall. Nikon D700 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens. 200 ISO; f/1.4, 1/500th.

One very helpful benefit of digital photography is the ability to see whether the effect you want has been achieved. This was shot with a Nikon D700 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens set at f/5.6.
