The Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 is only a 2 x zoom. Successors gained more wide-angle capability without losing the constant f/2.8. They incidentally cost a lot more and increased in physical dimensions and weight. The picture of the red check table cloth was made at 35mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture.

It is said that the 135mm prime lens is vestigial in this age of fast telephoto zoom lenses. Countering that opinion I would simply say that the lens is much cheaper and much lighter in weight.
