Royal Mail

30 Sep 2023 3 160
Ashton Street. Random Fact No.1: The 'ROYAL MAIL' legend first appeared on letter boxes in the early 1990s; prior to this letter boxes had the words 'POST OFFICE' cast onto them. The change was prompted by the separation of Post Office Counters Limited and Royal Mail as independent companies. Random Fact No.2: In the early days of letterboxes they were painted green so that they would not be obtrusive. That led to complaints from people who could not find them. Nikon D700 and Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI lens.

Through a Hedge, Darkly

The gap in the hedge to the field beyond was tiny. The breeze frequently obscured my view and even when it was clear, the poppies were off for a fandango. Added to all that, the white balance couldn't be pinned down. Short of my blundering through the hedge, with all the attendant injuries involved, this turns out to be the best that could be done. Nikon D2Xs with a Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm lens.

Transport in Rural Areas

The Domesday Book of 1068 recorded a settlement of 22 households at Langefel, tenanted by Borel. 'Langley' derives from 'long lea' i.e. 'long meadow'. There is considerable variation in road direction signposts. These look cheap. The Great Western Railway runs on the embankment in the distance. Nikon D2Xs with an 85mm f/1.8 AF-D lens (comparable to 127mm in full frame). 100 ISO; f/8; 1/80th.
