The Limbo Connection

This is a photograph from the back cover of the paperback edition published in 1977 by Magnum Books. The photographer was Robert Golden. He originally pursued photo-journalism and documentary work before moving on to still life photography, eventually specialising in photographing food. Somewhere in between the change of direction he was producing book covers, of which this is an example of his strong style and ability to interpret a brief. The book cover does not reveal the name of the model who posed for this assignment. I photographed the book using a Canon EOS 40D with a Chinon 55mm f/1.7 lens on an extension tube. I wonder what equipment Robert Golden used in 1977?

Diary

A book covered with the small ads page of the 'Evening Standard' of Thursday, April 7th, 1966, with other bits pasted on top: 'river plunge kills seven' from the 'Daily Express' of Tuesday, April 30th, 1968; a sticker of Picasso's 'Buste de Femme au Chapeau', a linocut from 1962 which I dared to modify; a photograph of a girl on a lone peace campaign I once saw when visiting Lacock Abbey, a strange place to make a protest, but a welcome sight nevertheless. All these things have somehow come together with the help of Pritt stick and watercolours. Photographed with a Chinon 55mm f/1.7 lens on a Canon EOS 30D.

Excursions Into The Past

26 May 2015 2 233
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there. In my shed where old things abound I take photographs with an old lens rescued from a mid-1970s Chinon CX camera and mull over the passage of time. Canon EOS 40D + Chinon 55mm f/1.7 + Minolta Close-Up Lens No.1 for SR.

Living In The Past

Manual dexterity extends also to photography. For this picture I used an Auto Chinon 55mm f/1.7 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera. Focussing is via the twiddle method, and a bit hit-and-miss. Yet it feels as though I am more involved in the process of making a photographic record.
