Mayther Lady

My 2010 photograph of this lady emerging from the Wild Cafe in Bath has now been cropped square and rendered in black-and-white. It’s not necessarily better like that, just different. Mayther was a boutique stationery shop in nearby Milsom Street. The Bath branch of Mayther closed in 2021. The Cheltenham shop followed soon after. In a world of austerity and high rental costs, not to mention Covid, who can indulge themselves in posh stationery?

A good deal depends on photo editing, which generally improves as new products are released. What you can't achieve using one editing program you can often accomplish with another. I have not the faintest idea why this is so. Ipernity used to provide a free version of picmonkey which I enjoyed using for its effects. Since its removal I have used another editor freely offered elsewhere when all else has failed. This photo from 2010 was only ever a JPG and the kit used - secondhand and outdated even then - was extremely basic by current standards. I never thought such detail could be recovered, especially the cafe interior. Old Owl has advised caution over deleting one's photographs. Pay heed, I say.
Wild Cafe, Bath
Interior of the Wild Cafe, Bath

A shot of the interior of the Wild Cafe in Bath taken with a Nikon FE fitted with a Nikon Type C 55mm f/3.5 Micro- PC Auto. This is a pre-Ai lens made between 1973 and 1975. In addition to using it with the FE (where a little lug on the lens throat needed to be raised for safe installation), I used it with an M2 extension ring on a Nikon D50 digital SLR. Only with the ring was it safe to use this lens on that camera, although there are some digital Nikons where it could be safely used. The effect of the M2 ring is to provide 1:1 macro; the lens alone has a maximum of 1:2 macro.
La Bicyclette En Dehors de la Restaurant

Photographed in Bath with a Nikon D50 and a Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G lens. The Wild Cafe is not a French restaurant, oh no, far from it. I was simply feeling whimsical when I posted this picture. Something about the French and bicycles, I guess.
