Still life - not set up, it's just a bowl of fruit - photographed using the little lightweight Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 lens (perversely on an elderly Canon EOS 30D camera).
This lens has the silkiest focussing I have ever experienced. A scratch on the front element made it a cheap secondhand buy, but the damage has never been apparent in use.
A few things endear me to the Canon camera. The size fits my hand perfectly. The menu is splendidly simple to use. It too was cheap on eBay (the megapixel motorway left it on the hard shoulder) and its colours turn out nicely.

Photographed with a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 trombone lens on a Canon EOS 30D. This lens was amongst the early optics when Canon abandoned the FD line and introduced the EOS cameras. It was in production from 1987 to 1994, although its optical formula is pretty much identical to the FD 35-105mm which preceded it. It is a nice lens but it has to be said that auto focus is slow and noisy. Being 30 years of age doesn't help much either.
Shot in dim light, no flash. Lens at 105mm, camera at 1600 ISO. 1/125th at f4.5 in manual mode. Processed in Lightroom. A Limbo Lockdown Production™.

Photographed using a lens made c1971 - a Nikkor-H 50mm f/2. It has been modified to AI standard so that it mounts safely on modern digital SLRs from Nikon, in this case an elderly D2Xs. 400 ISO; f/5.6; 1/180th.

Today I bought a Nikon D70s, a camera dating from c.2005. The D70 models are some of the few SLR cameras with a CCD sensor. These were abandoned because alternative technology was cheaper. It is claimed that CCD technology provides a particular character of rendering and resolution; a vibrancy not always evident in the CMOS sensors which replaced them. Differences in colour and white balance can be adjusted in post processing, whereas the difference between a faintly antiseptic CMOS and a vibrant CCD cannot be replicated after the shutter has been activated. Zack Arias, a photographer who started out with the D70/70s described the skin tone resolving power of the D70, as “mind-blowing”. (I have yet to risk blowing my own mind).
I thought it might be instructive to conduct my own tests, a fairly cheap exercise given the secondhand values of 14 year old digital cameras. I hope my D70 holds up long enough to reach a conclusion!
Lens at 70mm. 200 ISO; f/8; 1/320th.
