I took only my 'new' Nikon D40 with an 18-70mm lens (which gives a field of view like a 28-105mm on a full frame set-up). Later, I ruminated on the difference in weight between this combination and a D700 with a 28-105mm AF-D lens. The D700 combination weighs more than half as much again. That's not something you really want when your shirt is sticking to your back.

Nikon D40 + 18-70mm lens. Carrying this combination is a lot easier than, say, a Nikon D700 and a 28-105mm lens.

DX lens. FX camera. Doh!

Fujifilm Finepix S3 Pro SLR and Nikkor 18-70mm lens at 52mm.

I have used both the 18-135mm and the 18-70mm DX Nikkor lenses. Both are good. The 18-70mm is better built and faster, and the IQ is superior. But it lacks the reach of the 18-135mm which I found very useful when covering an event and wanting to avoid lens changes.
