Morris Eight Series E

The Morris Eight was restyled in 1938. I saw this one in a field adjoining Wilton Windmill when I visited in 2011. I've angled the picture to suggest the car is going downhill because that was the only way it could attain a speed of 60 mph. Logically the haystack is also going downhill, but that is an optical illusion. The laws of physics don't always apply in neolithic Wiltshire.
For information, Wilton Windmill is not in, nor particularly close to, the borough of Wilton near Salisbury. You'd do better looking for it near Marlborough.

The function of the fantail is to move the cap on its bearings and thus position the sails into the wind (if there is any wind).

The mill has four sails in total; two patent (these are the slatted sails which can be quickly activated) and two common canvas sails, which have to be set before the mill starts to turn.

This is an accidental photograph. I tripped the shutter by holding the camera clumsily. Later, I straightened it up in Lightroom and fiddled with the sliders here and there.

The function of the fantail is to move the cap on its bearings so that the sails can pick up the wind, if there is any.

If you want to visit the windmill - and on Sunday afternoons during summer you can go inside and look round - keep in mind that it is at Wilton near Marlborough, not Wilton near Salisbury.
