Ye Olde Building Techniques

Fujifilm X-E1 with Fujinon 35mm f/1.4 R lens. Processed from RAW in Lightroom. It was a bright cold winter day. At 800, the ISO was much too high and gave exposure of 1/420th at f/13.

Nikon D50 and Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AF lens, giving a field of view akin to 35mm on full frame. Aside from the excellent colour rendition provided by the D50, it was the last of the entry-level digital Nikons capable of providing the automatic focus mechanism for screw-driven AF Nikkors.

Lower Alma Street

A glimpse of how the 21st century affects 19th century housing. Most noticeable, perhaps, is the number of rubbish receptacles which residents are now expected to store, and to remember the cycle for putting them out to be emptied. These folks are spared any bother over the cycle because the only practical solution (at least for those not having the luxury of end-of-terrace) is to put them in their front garden area. And the reason they are so large is because the public bodies who are responsible for emptying them do so on a fortnightly timetable. A far cry from the days of a single tin can emptied once a week. Although the houses were clearly built to a budget, the use of stone lintels and quoins goes a long way to relieve the dominance of red brick, which is a gentler shade than the brick manufactured in our times. You will easily be able to notice other 21st century intrusions which were never part of the original houses erected circa 1860. Fujifilm X-E1 and Fujinon 35mm f/1.4 lens.

Locksbrook No.20

The view east from Locksbrook towards the City with Hungerford Road and Edward Street amongst the trees. I liked the roof pattern of inverted 'V's. Nikon D40 and AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VRII lens. Focal length 60mm (full frame equivalent 90mm). 400 ISO; f/8; 1/160th.

Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI Lens on Crop Sensor

Nikon D2Xs + 28mm Nikkor f/3.5 AI lens. Interviewed for ‘Camera & Darkroom’ magazine during the 1980s, Sally Mann (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Mann) said she had supported her artwork by doing lots of small freelance jobs. For this work she often used a 40mm Zuiko lens on a 35mm camera. She felt that 40mm was "about right." The field of view provided by a 28mm lens on a crop sensor camera is very close to 40mm. Therefore it might suit photographers who felt that, for their purposes, 50mm was a bit too long and 35mm was a bit too wide.
