Pontings and Pettit’s; Nova Magazine, Sewing World…

02 Aug 2023 1 86
66 Pontings and Pettit’s are the two old-fashioned ladies of Kensington High Street. The architecture and atmosphere haven’t changed for years and this old-world feel makes it nice to go shopping in them. Ponting’s fabric hall is full of unusual and reasonably priced materials, and they have about the best-stocked household linen department in London. In Pettit’s marvellous underwear department is a treasure trove of old ladies’ vests and camisoles; dyed or with transfers on they make smashing T-shirts. This camisole (left) is in pure wool and delicately knitted like a baby’s shawl. It comes in white and looks perfect worn ...99 The Nova feature dates from the mid to late 1960s. It didn't save Pontings and Pettit's. They closed down in 1970, having operated since 1863. Superimposed on the Nova article is a more recent bra fit guide, which seemed somehow appropriate. It was in 'Sewing World' magazine, which folded in 2018 after 22 years' existence. I can't remember where 'WHERE' came from. Probably also Nova magazine.

Cheap Day Return (Paintbrush Edit)

To get UK residents ready for the change to decimal currency in 1971, things were marked in both old and new money for some months prior to 15th February. This photograph of a railway ticket issued in January 1970 placed on top of the front cover of a 'Nova' magazine of slightly later date was made during May, 2014 with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI lens on a Nikon D50 camera. It always looked a bit 'dirty' because of reflection and degradation, and so I used the Paintbrush programme to improve the colour and contrast.

Ballito advertisement, early 1970s. There was a picture as well which I have not bothered with.

Volvo Plus

Whilst leafing through an old 'Nova' magazine, it fell open at an unusual angle where the right-hand page was an advertisement for a Volvo car. The left-hand page being a stronger image, I converted it to black and white and increased contrast. However, the best part of the car advertisement - the couple admiring the car - somehow became isolated and more interesting.

(Not) Fade Away

The dress was such a strong component in this advertisement from the 1960s that it was easy to make its occupant fade in significance via a few judicious shunts of the sliders in the processing software.

A Curious Burst of Energy

A Woman at the Seaside (Nova)

One August afternoon at the seaside I encountered this girl who was taking photographs and asked if I could take one of her. The encounter was over in a moment. I sent a large number of holiday pix off for prints. This was one of them. Later, in an old Nova magazine from 1965, I saw a short story by Edna O'Brien entitled 'A Woman at the Seaside' in an interesting typeface and I thought of combining the two.

The cardigan is named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British Army Major General who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War.
