Naish Hill Fingerpost (Looking North)

This fingerpost on the road between Devizes and Derry Hill is in a poor state of repair. It probably dates from before 1933 when a change in regulations resulted in the supporting posts being striped black and white. That being the case, this road sign might well have been lifted and stored in 1940 when a German invasion of Britain was imminent. No point telling the Wehrmacht the way to Naish Hill.

The Domesday Book of 1068 recorded a settlement of 22 households at Langefel, tenanted by Borel.
'Langley' derives from 'long lea' i.e. 'long meadow'.
There is considerable variation in road direction signposts. These look cheap.
The Great Western Railway runs on the embankment in the distance.

Religion is on the decline, with nearly half of the population of England and Wales – and more than half in Scotland – saying they have no religion. Perhaps this signpost is a metaphor for what has happened to the Church since it was erected to show people the way.
