Having bought the book in the secondhand bookshop at Lacock Abbey, I felt an unstoppable urge to photograph it under Benjamin Carter's sphinx which is supported by the plinth in the picture. The book is open at a reproduction of Evelyn Hofer's 'Portrait in Windowlight' photographed in 1969. Secondhand books are seldom described as 'used' or (worse) 'pre-loved'. I need to analyse why this is so, and whether it means books are held in high or low esteem generally. Photographed with a 50mm f/2.8 vintage Tessar lens on a Canon EOS 40D.

Caught on brambles alongside a little-used footpath. Perhaps it became a refugee from some nearby washing line when a gale blew. I looked inside to check it was not occupied and discovered a 'Primark' label, hence the unusual precision in the title. Nikon D2Xs and Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm lens at 105mm. 400 ISO; f/6; 1/80th.

Note the inscription 'Machan Scotland' which denotes manufacture at the foundry of Machan Engineering, Denny, Falkirk. The foundry was dissolved in 2016. Orders for new post boxes had dwindled. There are over 100,000 post boxes in the United Kingdom. The 'ROYAL MAIL' legend first appeared on letter boxes in the early 1990s; prior to this letter boxes had the words 'POST OFFICE' cast onto them. The change was prompted by the separation of Post Office Counters Limited and Royal Mail as independent companies. Nikon D2Xs at 100 ISO. Tamron 35mm f/1.8 lens at f/8. 1/180th.

Canon EOS 40D + Soligor C/D 28mm Wide-Auto f/2.8 lens. The field of view of a 28mm wide-angle lens on a Canon crop sensor camera is 45mm. You get a standard lens experience but with the depth-of-field advantages a wide-angle lens provides.
