Canon EOS 40D + Soligor C/D 28mm f/2.8 + Minolta supplementary close-up lens no.1. The field of view of a 28mm wide-angle lens on a Canon crop sensor camera is 45mm. You get a standard lens experience but with the depth-of-field advantages a wide-angle lens provides. This is a black and white edit of a photograph originally made in colour and which is elsewhere in my stream.

The oak is not as common as the other deciduous trees in the places I frequent, and so when I saw this pair of leaves I brought them home and photographed them with the Chinon 55mm f/1.4 on a Canon EOS 30D via an M42 - EOS adapter. A Minolta Close-Up Lens No.1 helped with close focus.

Press 'z' for the full technicolor squidginess. Shot with a secondhand Nikon D60 and 18-55mm kit lens bought in 2009. My first digital SLR. It was a revelation. The following year I sold all my Minolta stuff for a fraction of what I had paid for it. Photography was never going to be the same again.

I used two supplementary lenses in combination for this picture: a Nikon Close-Up No.4T screwed into the filter ring of a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens, and a Minolta Close-Up No.1 screwed into the 4T. Even acknowledging the superior optical quality of these supplementary lenses, you can see the degradation from using two together. I certainly would not recommend the cheap thin types unless you deliberately want to create a low-fi look. The inescapable conclusion is to use a proper macro lens for close-up work.
