The Milward Handy Sewing Gauge and Supporting Cast

30 Jun 2024 1 84
Nikon D2Xs and Tamron 35mm f/1.8. Unusual for a prime lens, this one has Vibration Compensation (VC) technology which provides up to three stops of of image stabilisation. Handy on practically any camera that it is compatible with, it is particularly valuable with the D2Xs where ISO beyond 400 can degrade images. The lens will also focus a good deal closer than its competition. The sewing tin was photographed with the camera at 200 ISO, f/2 and 1/100th.

Fire Hydrant Sign

01 Nov 2019 3 1 219
Photographed with a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera. This lens was amongst the first of the new Canon EF mount and precedes the digital technology. However, it works well enough on my £69 EOS 30D. I love making pictures with old kit. The latest tech might be better, but by what margin? f/8, 1/500th, 800 ISO. Going for sharpness at the expense of noise. Not that 800 ISO is particularly bad on a 30D anyway.

Watering the Sunflower Plants

21 Jun 2019 8 6 244
The secondhand Nikon D70s which I bought for £49 has performed well - sometimes. Some of its output has shown banding and image break-up of a calamitous order. The camera has frequently demanded a format of its memory card quite unnecessarily and at some inconvenience in escaping from the instruction. Sadly it must go back to the seller who described it as 'good'. Pah! Lens at 29mm. 200 ISO; f/6.3; 1/160th.

Diary

The final image from the paperweight project. Photographed with a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm 2.8 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera. The Tessar design dates back to 1902 and this particular type was launched at the beginning of the 1950s. It is very light and compact with only four elements and is one of the least expensive M42 lenses - mine was £12 five years ago. There is no cheaper way to acquire a Carl Zeiss lens. The minimum focusing distance is 35 cm (a shade under 14 inches). Compare this to the Nikkor-H 50mm f/2 of 1963 which has a minimum focusing distance of a shade under 24 inches, which was reduced to about 18 inches when reconfigured to the AI standard in 1974. The CZJ Tessar is practically macro!

A detail from a Van Heusen Shirt Box dating from the late 1960s; a badge to commemorate 150 years of the Great Western Railway (the celebration was cancelled in response to the decision to close BREL Swindon workshops - insensitive timing by BREL); a part of a pocket watch which didn't work and was taken apart out of curiosity. Photographed with a Nikon D700 and a 55mm Micro-Nikkor f/3.5 AI lens.
