Second Hand Books

27 Mar 2020 111
The measures taken to limit the spread of Coronavirus have had a big effect on the availability of second hand books. Even if no measures had been introduced, many customers would probably be cautious over handling second hand goods which are routinely inspected by countless other people. Some sellers could go out of business; stocks of books might be destroyed. Another example, perhaps, of how things will be changed by this awful pandemic. London Camera Exchange Window

City of Bath; Nikon D300s + Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. I like looking in LCE's windows for the good laugh they provide with their optimistic pricing structure. With the aggressive presence of increasing numbers of on-line traders in secondhand equipment, the days of LCE must be numbered. Especially if they fail to wipe the condensation from the inside of their windows within the first three hours of trading - this was the view shortly before midday.

Rust Gains a Rapid Grip

Rusty nut, bolt, and washer - no idea why I own them, nor where they came from. I think old nuts and bolts adopt people in the middle of the night and are discovered years later by bewildered tool tidiers. The background is page 70 of Ron Grace's incomparable manual 'Home Repairs' published in 1979 and which cost me 75p in a second-hand store. If ever there were two words that characterised my approach to life in general, they are 'second hand'. Although that might be just one word: 'secondhand' ? I am not sure what the hairy crud is on the dome of the bolt. I gingerly touched it with my finger and it didn't fight back. Perhaps it is in hibernation. I definitely think it is alive and growing.
