Nikon D40 and Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC lens. The D40 has a crop sensor and so pairing it with a 35mm lens makes using it like the old days of film when you bought a camera with a standard 50mm lens.

Watering the Sunflower Plants

The secondhand Nikon D70s which I bought for £49 has performed well - sometimes. Some of its output has shown banding and image break-up of a calamitous order. The camera has frequently demanded a format of its memory card quite unnecessarily and at some inconvenience in escaping from the instruction. Sadly it must go back to the seller who described it as 'good'. Pah! Lens at 29mm. 200 ISO; f/6.3; 1/160th.

Magnifying Glass and Reading Glasses

I continue to use the Nikon D2Xs camera which was introduced in 2006. It is heavy yet comfortable to use and there is a handy switch or button to change settings and save delving in menu lists. Photographs taken at base 100 ISO are noise-free, and so that is where I like it set. This necessitates fast lenses and a steady hand or tripod. Fortunately the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 lens has image stabilisation to help get the picture in low light. Speed: 1/25th. Aperture: f/2.8. ISO: 100.

Press

This is a close-up of a screw press on exhibition in the Fox Talbot museum at Lacock. It obviously had some function in early photography, presumably near the end of the process when the image was nearing completion, The museum ranges over two floors in an old barn. The lighting is varied and challenging and the point-and-shoot method with everything in automatic seldom produces a satisfactory outcome. Here I tried the exact opposite with a 28mm f/2 Nikkor AI lens on a Nikon D300s. The starting point was taking a white balance reading which would record the colours faithfully. You find all this stuff out as you go along, looking at the screen on the back and making adjustments. Gifted people can do it with film. I never could.

Campaign to Prevent the State from Promoting False…

If I won the lottery - which is improbable for several reasons, not least that I never buy a ticket - I would establish and finance a Campaign to Prevent the State from Promoting False Hope Through Gambling.

Sunday Morning Macro

I used two supplementary lenses in combination for this picture: a Nikon Close-Up No.4T screwed into the filter ring of a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens, and a Minolta Close-Up No.1 screwed into the 4T. Even acknowledging the superior optical quality of these supplementary lenses, you can see the degradation from using two together. I certainly would not recommend the cheap thin types unless you deliberately want to create a low-fi look. The inescapable conclusion is to use a proper macro lens for close-up work.

The Radić Pavilion

The Radić Pavilion was installed at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in March 2015, at the end of Oudolf Field. Designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić, this unique structure was first unveiled as the Serpentine Gallery 2014 Pavilion. Photographed with a Nikon D700 and Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 AI-S lens.
