Through the Heat Whispered Trees

It was a mystery tour in a cream and red Bedford OB coach. There were people there who wanted to be characters in my forthcoming novel. The coach driver said he'd received an e-mail saying that I had not paid my fare. He drove off and left me here. I thought, 'It's 1956, how could he have received an e-mail?' When my gaze returned to this avenue of trees there was an elderly man with a beard sitting at an easel with a child's paint box, a tin one, like you got at Christmas in 1956. I told him about the e-mail thing while he used up the last of the raw sienna. He shrugged and replied that he had no experience of industrial processes. 'Do you know,' he said, 'I have asked for another paint box like this for my Christmas present this year. But most unfortunately I shall die before the feast.'
That man was Claude Monet. His calendar was 30 years out. But he couldn't care less.
Note to people of the USA: It is quite illogical to say, 'I could care less', when you mean you don't care at all. Think about it.
No Cycling

For about 60 years this was a footpath which provided a shortcut from the town to a housing estate. There was a prohibition order banning cycling on this path and the railings served to emphasise the serious intent. I don't know if there was ever a prosecution; many times I saw cyclists ignoring the ban with impunity. Then recently the railings were removed and the path widened. The prohibition order was revoked and lines were painted on the new tarmac delineating where cyclists should cycle and walkers should walk. It all seemed a bit pointless really.

Apostle Garden

The Apostle Garden at Lytes Cary Manor takes its name from the twelve yew bushes that line the front path, with the water tower at the end built in imitation of Avebury Manor dovecote.
Sir Walter Jenner, who was the son of Queen Victoria's physician, bought Lytes Cary Manor in 1907. His brother Leopold had recently acquired and begun restoring Avebury Manor, Wiltshire. On his death in 1948, Sir Walter left Lytes Cary to the National Trust. Coincidentally, the National Trust also now owns Avebury Manor which they bought in 1991.

A damp Wednesday morning in Trowbridge. An attempt to do it the old way: 50mm prime lens (a Carl Zeiss Jena f/2.8 Tessar); manual focus, of course, and all-manual exposure setting. The camera was a Canon EOS 30D - I am not yet contemplating the final hurdle of film.
The field of view with this camera and lens combination is similar to using a lens of 80mm focal length on a 35mm film camera. Only occasionally frustrating for wide shots, it is generally a satisfying general purpose lens.

Photographed in Avebury, Wiltshire, with a Nikon D700 and an AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-210mm f/4 lens. This lens was made for less than a year during 1986-87 and replaced by a cheaper and inferior product lacking a constant aperture across its 70-210mm zoom.

A trip to Avebury. The weather forecast was for blustery winds with just an odd chance of a shower. I got a few pictures and then ... I got drenched. The cheese scone was worth the trip however.
