The 'Beer In The Evening' website includes a user review of this pub by an anonymous contributor remarking "the sort of pub where a woman may come in on her own, and feel safe, as long as she has a sense of humour."

It's a Thursday morning on a fine day in early October, a bit before half past ten. Opinion is divided over whether there's any need for a coat; this man is firmly in the 'keep the breeze out' side. There's a handy bench near where someone is selling flowers, and he sits down on it for a smoke. Perhaps he's waiting for a companion to finish their errands; perhaps he simply feels a bit fatigued. It's 2012, over ten years ago now, before Covid and the worst effects of austerity. Although there are still pubs in the locality (not so many since though) he has chosen not to go for a swift half. The beer in this town has never been its strongest attraction. Perhaps he reckons it's not worth the asking price, or he doesn't bother with drink, or he prefers his own company. Some pub customers have a habit of being objectionable even this early in the morning. He keeps a canvas bag close to him; many chaps might prefer not to have custody of a bag, but the older you become the less you care, and a bag is indisputably handy for odds and ends you need to get for the daily grind. There's a bus stop not far away. He could be waiting for the next service and there is time to spare. I bet he could tell a few stories, but would he want to? Probably best not to interrupt. He might want time to think.

The doors are slammed shut. The guard's whistle sounds; the engine driver replies. We lurch away. With each belch from the engine the carriages jerk forward, It takes some distance before a steady rhythm of movement is established. The drizzle falls against the windows. There is a coolness in the air and a slight scent of wet socks. The dust rises and swirls due to being disturbed from the upholstery. This is comfort.

The Chippenham Wheelers Man

I guess the words on the cycling kit are positioned to be read when the wearer is crouched on a bike. But it's still inconsistent. He'd have to be on his back to read the shorts and on his front to read the tunic.
I don't know why the Chippenham Wheelers carry hoes around on their journeys. He told me that if he didn't clear the weeds, no-one would. I admire his public spirit.

Dalmatians are intelligent and good at killing rats. They don't take immediately to strangers. They are predisposed to hearing and hip problems. The breed originates in Dalmatia. Where in the world is Dalmatia? (Answers on a postcard ...)

Scenes of a Wiltshire village one Thursday afternoon in September, 2015.
Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 + Nikon Teleconverter TC-16A. The EXIF data shows '134.5 mm' because I set the camera for a 135mm focal length to compensate for using a teleconverter with the 105mm lens. 135mm is, of course, not 105 x 1.6 but it's close enough for metering.

Bad luck for two members of a canoeing club who took an unplanned dip (the other unfortunate bloke is out of picture). I watched this unfold. For several seconds - long enough to pause and stabilise - the canoe was wobbling dangerously without any caution or correction. I know nothing about canoeing but instinctively I know not to press on with a foolhardy manoeuvre when in water (Costa Concordia; Titanic, just for starters). At least the instructor had the good grace to apologise to the novice.

Nikon D700 + Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 AI-S lens. The reference in the title to a platform ticket is poetic licence. You don't need a platform ticket to look at what's going on at the East Somerset Railway.

Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro + Tamron Di II SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR LD lens. Image quality of this lens is very decent but it is limited in its focal range. I was frequently looking to go beyond 50mm. Eventually, and reluctantly, I let it go.
