Naish Hill Fingerpost (Looking North)

04 Nov 2020 3 112
This fingerpost on the road between Devizes and Derry Hill is in a poor state of repair. It probably dates from before 1933 when a change in regulations resulted in the supporting posts being striped black and white. That being the case, this road sign might well have been lifted and stored in 1940 when a German invasion of Britain was imminent. No point telling the Wehrmacht the way to Naish Hill.

Those Gates

15 Feb 2020 6 2 215
The seemingly inexorable decline of these gates is a subject of morbid fascination. People pass by hundreds of times daily noticing to varying degrees the ineffable beauty of their final days, wondering if some human intervention will change the scene for better or worse. Meanwhile, I am compelled by forces I do not understand to record the changes, tiny though they be. Canon EOS 30D + 18-55mm kit lens. ISO 200; 45mm (72mm equivalent). 1/250th at f/13.

The Red Tin Shed

Photographed using a lens made c1971 - a Nikkor-H 50mm f/2. It has been modified to AI standard so that it mounts safely on modern digital SLRs from Nikon, in this case an elderly D2Xs. 400 ISO; f/5.6; 1/180th.

The Wrecked Fence

01 Apr 2016 291
I photographed this detail of a dilapidated fence destroyed by the Spring storms using an early version of a Helios-44 lens. It has a focal length of 58mm and a maximum aperture of f/2. This was about as close as it would focus. Many Zenit cameras were supplied with this lens. It is a Soviet copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar lens and has distinctive bokeh characteristics.

30 Oct 2015 1 197
After the morning rain, a damp afternoon in a cemetery during autumn, the season of sleep and death. Photographed with a Nikon D2Xs and an AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8 lens.
