04 Feb 2025 6
The Reed Bunting – Emberiza schoeniclus – is a sparrow sized little bird but slimmer and with a deeply notched tail. The male has a black head which is streaked with white in winter, a white collar and a drooping white moustache whilst the female is streaky brown all over. Found near wetlands with reed beds and scattered bushes they feed on seeds and invertebrates, often invading farmland in winter to feed on seeds. Seen at Pennington Flash. The Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus - or Common Reed Bunting, can be found not only in reedbeds (as its name suggests) but also in moorland and cultivated areas. In summer and breeding time the head and throat of the male are quite black with just a few white/brown flecks but, as you can see, in winter they show a much more mottled appearance in these areas. Common throughout Europe this sparrow sized bird will eat insects when breeding but their normal diet throughout the rest of the year is seeds. This one was seen at Pennington Flash, Leigh, Lancashire. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted.
