Welsh Poppy - Papaver cambricum

11 Feb 2025 3 2 13
The Welsh Poppy – Meconopsis cambrica but now known as Papaver cambricum – is a perennial flowering plant with yellow to orange flowers native to upland Western Europe and has been used since 2006 as the basis for the logo of the Welsh political party Plaid Cymru. It prefers damp shady places on rocky ground and will live happily in crevices between paving slabs, edges of walls and rocky outcrops. This lovely yellow one was seen at Martin Mere. Whooper Swan - Cygnus cygnus

09 Jan 2025 31
The Whooper (pronounced 'hooper') Swan - Cygnus cygnus - also known as the Common Swan, is a large Swan which migrates to Britain from Iceland during the winter months, although just a few pairs do breed in the north of the UK. Very similar to, but larger than, the Bewicks Swan, they mainly eat aquatic plants and grass but will also take grain and even potatoes. They pair for life with the cygnets staying with the parents throughout the winter, even sometimes being joined by brothers or sisters from previous years. They are very noisy and have a loud honking call. Seen enjoying the winter sun with Coots and Mallards at Martin Mere Wetlands Center. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Look Into The Heart Of Me

16 Dec 2024 12
Fringed Tulips are a beautiful flower which occurs in many varieties. This, I believe, is the Crispa Tulip ‘Hamilton’ which hopefully a gardening expert will either confirm or correct my id. This lovely specimen was found at Martin Mere. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Cinnabar Moth Caterpillar - Tyria jacobaeae

01 Dec 2024 18
The Cinnabar Moth – Tyria jacobaeae – is a small black and red moth which is dependant on the Common Ragwort to survive. This is because it lays its eggs on the lower leaves of the plant and when the caterpillars emerge they eat their way up the plant to the top as you can see here. Poison from the plant helps to protect them from predators as it does the adult moth which can cause a rash if handled. The caterpillars, when mature, leave the plant to spin cocoons in the earth in which they hibernate before emerging in spring/summer as fully grown moths. These were seen at Martin Mere. Marsh Marigold - Caltha palustris

02 Nov 2024 2 2 20
The lovely Marsh Marigold – Caltha palustris – is also known as Kingcup or King Cup and favours damp places like marshes, ditches, wet woodlands etc. It is a large buttercup like flower and is quite popular with gardeners as it is easy to maintain and works well in boggy areas that other flowering plants do not like. This beauty was seen at Martin Mere Wetlands. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Common Wasp - Vespula vulgaris

24 Oct 2024 4 3 36
The Common Wasp – Vespula vulgaris – is normally a mild mannered little creature. Although they can be extremely annoying, they will not attack or sting unless provoked or scared so it is best to not wave or try to bat them away. (Don’t ask me how to get them off your picnic sandwiches though, without doing just that). This one was seen happily searching for pollen at Three Sisters, near Wigan. Greenfinches (M) - Chloris chloris

11 Aug 2024 1 31
These two male European Greenfinches - Chloris chloris - can be seen in this picture but just imagine when green buds start sprouting and then become leaves, you really have little chance of spotting these beautiful birds unless they come out into the open. The greenfinch is widespread throughout Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia and has been introduced into Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand and Australia. These two were seen checking something out, possibly a female, at Martin Mere. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Snouted Duck Fly - Anasimyia lineata

06 Aug 2024 31
This tiny little fly sitting in a buttercup flower is, I now believe to be, the Snouted Duck Fly – Anasimyia lineata – which is a species of hoverfly commonly found near wetlands, swampy water areas, ditches etc. It is unusual because of its long snout which tapers to a point which, unfortunately cannot be seen in this picture. Seen at Pennington Flash, Leigh, Lancashire. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Great Tit - Parus major

17 Jun 2024 42
The Great Tit - Parus major - is the largest of the Tit family and is a very common sight in gardens, woodland and many other habitats. They eat insects, seeds, berries and nuts as well as offerings at bird tables etc. This one was seen at Pennington Flash. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. None of my images may be copied, reproduced or altered in any form or manner or placed on the internet or any other social media, or in any form of publication either print or otherwise, in any form or manner without my written permission.

Common Wasp - Vespula vulgaris

27 Jan 2024 53
The mere sight of a Common Wasp - Vespula vulgaris - hovering around is enough to send many people running and flailing their arms about trying to get rid of it. It is exactly this action, though, that may cause it to sting because under normal circumstances it will usually not sting without being provoked by sudden movement or threatening behaviour. The sting is, however, rarely life threatening and is an alkaline venom as against Bee venom which is acidic. I find it fascinating how the body flexes at the middle. This one was spotted peacefully enjoying nectar at the Three Sisters Recreational area, Wigan. Explored No 466, Jan 18th 2023 This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Feather And Flower

01 Nov 2023 1 52
The lovely little Yellow Water Lily - Nuphar lutea - is a small Water Lily which can be found in Europe, West Indies, Eastern USA and North Africa. Also known as the Brandy Bottle (because of its scent), Spadderdock, Bullhead Lily, Yellow Cow-Lily and many other common or popular names, it has been used as a food source and in medicinal practices from prehistoric times and potential research is still going forward. This little scene was seen on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Pennington Flash, Leigh, Lancashire. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. European Goldfinch - Carduelis carduelis

01 Oct 2023 70
The brightly coloured European Goldfinch - Carduelis carduelis - is native to Europe, North Africa and western and central Asia and has been introduced to other countries including Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay. They can be seen just about anywhere, either solo or in small flocks, looking for small seeds from Ragwort, Teasels, Dandelions etc. (notice the sharp pointy beak for getting at those seeds) and are happy in gardens preferring sunflower kernels or niger (or nyjer) seed to anything else on offer. This one is, I think, just coming into adulthood because, although it has its red face, the white marks on the wings and tail are not yet fully defined. It was seen from a nature hide at Martin Mere, Burscough, Lancashire. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Eurasian Blue Tit - Parus caeruleus (or Cyanistes…

22 Aug 2023 54
The Eurasian Blue Tit - Parus caeruleus (or Cyanistes caeruleus) - is the only bird native to Britain with blue and yellow plumage. It is a small bird 12cm (4.7in) long with a wingspan of 18cm (7.1in) which loves to eat aphids and other plant pests, grubs and some moths as well as the food we put out in the garden for them. They will nest wherever there is a suitable and safe hole whether that be in a tree, wall, stump or nest boxes and will return to the same hole year after year until one of the pair dies then that hole will more than likely be taken by another pair. This one was seen at Pennington Flash. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Oriental Fruit Fly - Bactrocera dorsalis

05 Aug 2023 76
This colourful little one is a male Oriental Fruit Fly - Bactrocera dorsalis - which is a tiny little fly just 8mm (adult) long but can cause so much damage to any fruit within its flight range. A female can lay more than 3000 eggs in her lifetime all of which are laid in both cultivated and wild fruit which is ripe or nearly ripe, causing the fruit to be unusable. Endemic to Southeast Asia it is a highly invasive species which now has a presence in at least 65 countries. This one was seen on the spadix of a small peace lily in the gardens of our hotel in Khao Lak, Thailand. This Picture is fully © Copyrighted. Spotted Forest Skink - Sphenomorphus maculatus

14 Jul 2023 68
This is the beautiful Spotted Forest Skink - Sphenomorphus maculatus - also known as the Stream Side Skink or the Maculated Forest Skink, which is commonly found in South and Southeast Asia. Normally nocturnal, it lives in wooded and forested areas near streams and small rivers in lowland and hilly areas, foraging among rocks and vegetation close to the waters edge where it feeds on small insects and invertebrates. This one, however, was seen happily sitting on a rock, in the afternoon, by the side of the footpath through a forest leading to Little Sandy Beach (or Little White Sandy Beach) in Khaolak, Thailand.
