"Here we are in Edinburgh. What a lovely journey it's been", said David as the 'Flying Scotsman' steamed into the Waverley Station. "Good old 'Scottish Union and Sixty-thousand-and-nine".

"We'll soon be in Scotland now", said Mother as the train crossed the long bridge at Berwick-on-Tweed. "Keep your eyes open for the post which marks the boundary of England and Scotland".

At lunch time they went along to the dining car, and as a special treat were allowed to choose what they would have. Jean ordered fish, David had sausages, they both finished up with ices.

"When I'm a man I'm going to be an engine driver", said David, but just then they passed a signal box. "No , perhaps I'll be a signalman instead", he said. "I'd love to pull those levers".

"Lets go and see our engine driver", said David, so Jean went along the platform with him. The driver told them that the engine's name was 'Scottish Union', and that it would take the train as far as Newcastle.

Soon it was time for the 'Flying Scotsman' to start, so the Guard blew his whistle and waved his flag. Jean and David stood at the window and waved to people on the platform.

Not long after the 'Flying Scotsman' had left Newcastle, David pointed out an electric train. "Look" he said, "that must be on a surburban line, but it's a different type from our trains at home".

At Newcastle the fresh engine 'Union of South Africa' No.60009, was waiting to take the 'Flying Scotsman' on the last part of her journey. The children waved goodbye to 'Scottish Union'.

Kiing's Cross Station is very busy and they keep close to the porter who is carrying their luggage to the right platform for the 'Flying Scotsman', the train which is to take them to Edinburgh.

"Look at those horses", said Jean. " I didn't know that horses travellerd by train". "They do", said David. "They have special vans with ramps so that the horses can walk in".

"Thank you, young man", said the ticket collector as he clipped the tickets and handed them back to David. "Your train is on the left. Now put the tickets away safely, you'll be needing them".

From Waterloo they went across London in a taxi to Kings Cross Station. Here they are: Jean is carrying her doll Sally, but David's favourite toy, a model train, has been packed in his suitcase.

Jean and David were going on a long journey, to stay with thir Grandmother, who lived in Edinburgh. First they went in an electric train which took them to Waterloo Station, in London.
