Support

A massive timber support, about two thirds of the way into the tunnel from the Treherbert end. It was completed on the 22nd April 1969.

The three trees

These trees are still in situ today, giving a clue to the location of the now buried tunnel mouth.

Treherbert end

A closer view of the Treherbert end of the tunnel. The date plaque above the tunnel mouth clearly visible.

Traces

I visited this tunnel several times and each year we left our mark. Here is my friends initials DTV from 1973 and 1974.

Wet underfoot

24 Jul 2010 94
A blurry shot just inside the Blaengwynfi end, shows water wall to wall. This end was always very wet due the proximity of a stream running almost overhead. You can see items of rubbish placed as stepping stones through the water which extended back about 25 yards.

Blaengwynfi Stn and the Tunnel

A great shot of the Blaengwynfi end of the tunnel and the closed station. The stream mentioned above can be seen to the right. Also visible is the top of the air shaft just a few yards into the tunnels length.

The Blaengwynfi end

The Blaengwynfi end of the Rhondda tunnel. Apparently views of this end are quite rare?

Dramatic approach

24 Jul 2010 82
One the most dramatic approaches to any tunnel, as the mountain reared up beyond the tunnel mouth. A wet snowy day.

The coal seam

24 Jul 2010 76
This coal seam passes behind one of the recesses in the tunnel wall, and had been mined by local villagers. It must have been a long carry out though!
