Happy New Year...not. So, here we are again, dear friends. Once more into a breach that will be as new as a scruffy pair of old boots. If anything will be new about 2025, possibly, it’ll be the quasi-universal official confirmation and ceremonial proscription of outlandish notions and practices such as compassion, generosity, subtlety, moral courage, truth-seeking & telling, impious curiosity, non-Hollywood-sanctioned imagination, creativity other than AI-generated, and the slightest shape of dissent from the All-Parties=One-Party line. It’ll be lovely, you’ll see. Nobody will disagree with anybody else, everybody will see, think, talk and do as they’re told. Everybody will ear the same jingle of the spheres (aka social media) and sing from the same authorized hymn sheet. True difference will be a thing of an all but forgotten past and will be replaced by the rule of snugly legislated identity politics. Every single soul will “elevate” his/her/its lifestyle according to the sacred diktats of the designated influencer of choice and thus become “iconic”, “vibrant” and “deserving” overnight. And so on… Still, you know the drill. Resist, bite, bait, wound, be incredibly bothersome, give Them the finger, love your neighbour and Beckett on best you can. Have no truck with bondage, mental or otherwise, and if you can’t beat then, bite them until you teeth fall off. Have a lovely life and un po’ di mu’. And so far it’s being the typical English Spring: cold, wet, dull and Tory-ridden. But let us try & make it the best we can, be only only to annoy The Powers That Be. Dig out your Tom Leher, your authentic bootleg Russian vodka, your Tolstoy, your Bakunin and your Rachmaninov. Defy, resist, bite and dance (The Rite of Spring, what else?) naked in the garden (weather permitting). And, above all, stay sane. Grooviness, love and borscht to you all.

As usual, I prefer to start a new year on a nice Sweetness & Light note. That leaves me with 360-odd days for the rants and the cursing. (In fact, there is one of those in the oven as we speak -so to speak). In any case, especially in these crappy end-days, love is always something to be pushed and promoted and spread and, if at all possible, practiced. Not easy, I know; almost everything else tends to make it challenging. The trends are towards hate and division, and quarrelling and emphasizing the differences. The Masters of the Universe become increasingly repulsive and their doctrines progressively more unacceptable. Let us combat them best we can. Have a good year. May a thousand little fishes fall in love with you.

I like them very much and they give me hope, although I fear that they’ll soon become obsolete. But not yet. Any way you can, no matter how small. As often as you can. Spread understanding and graciousness. Help counteract the tide of nastiness that’s beginning to choke the spirit out of us all. Don’t do “social” distancing, call things by their name, not what the Guardian or the Daily Mail or, Bumba forfend!, the BBC tells you to call them. Stay sane and spread sanity. Have a lovely week. I dedicate this to Chris Williamson. Is very rare for me to have any time, let alone sympathy, for a politician but it’s good to make exceptions. Fraudulent nonsense ought to be fought, tooth & claw, wherever and whenever met.
